USFL franchise, Denver Gold, played since its inception, the immediate competition with its direct neighbors of the NFL, the Broncos. Moreover, it is not surprising to find in the technical staff of Gold, people like Red MILLER or former quarterback Craig MORTON, from the Broncos, who officiate as a coach for the franchise USFL.
Denver was the archetype of the team that builds on the long term. With, at first a line of attack fairly average but can rely on a good defensive base. The team was strengthened in 1984 attack, which allowed him to reach the end of the season with a perfect equality : 9 wins and as many defeats. In 1985, after a season of good quality (11 wins to 07 losses), the Gold playoffs come down to be "destroyed" by Memphis Showboats 48-07.
Which clearly killed this franchise, it was the decision of the league to move the football season in the year 1986, from spring to autumn, returning in open conflict with the NFL. In fact, many fans would see Gold earlier this year and ended with the Broncos, but at the time of selection, NFL franchise gains the fans. It must be more than the Broncos could count on the services of a certain quarterback John ELWAY as to ensure the show. Anyway, the results were not long to wait and just 1/3 of the audience over the inaugural year of the USFL, the Denver franchise throw down the gauntlet to the end of 1985.
Denver however mark the history of professional football in the development of tactics known as "Run and shoot offense." Mouse DAVIS, coaching the Gold in 1985, was the architect of what will prove to be one of the more lucrative tactics during the 80s. In very simplified, the principle is quite risky leverage recipients of a team to be sure to have at least one free during the attack, and especially to confuse tactics could have defense.
